Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
